2018 Kia Niro Is the Latest Kia to Become IIHS Top Safety Pick+

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently put the 2018 Kia Niro through its crash-test paces and the final result is yet another Top Safety Pick+ for the Kia brand.

The Kia Niro, Canada's most fuel-efficient crossover, joins the 2018 Kia Forte sedan, 2018 Kia Soul, 2018 Kia Optima, and 2019 Kia Sorento as Top Safety Pick+ models. No other brand has earned more Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, an independent body with rigorous crash test standards. Top Safety Picks include the Cadenza, Sedona, 2018 Sorento, and Sportage.

In the Niro's latest crash regimen, shown in video below, the Niro PHEV is smashed into a barrier at 64 kmh in the passenger-side small overlap test.

If all went perfectly according to plan, no Kia Niro owner, no Kia owner of any kind, and no driver of any brand would ever suffer the result of a highway collision. Preparing for the worst-case scenario is nevertheless a wise idea.

* In order to meet IIHS Top Safety Pick+ standards - and not just Top Safety Pick - vehicles must be equipped with autonomous emergency braking, as in the case of the Kia Niro SX Touring.
