2019 Nissan Leaf Is Much More Than an Electric Car

The Nissan LEAF is a great electric car, and also a great car.

Often overlooked, the depth of the 2019 Nissan LEAF's appeal goes far beyond its high-capacity battery and long-distance EV range.

There's something about alternative means of propulsion that cause analysts, reviewers, and even shoppers to focus on only one thing: range or charge time or perhaps rebates. To be fair, those are hugely important subjects in the electric vehicle segment, but to focus only on those aspects of ownership would be akin to judging all conventionally-powered vehicles only by fuel economy or theoretical fuel tank range.

Now, here's the good news. When it comes to the LEAF's capacity to operate as a pure electric vehicle, its credentials are top-notch.

  • Over 400,000 LEAFs have been sold worldwide with owners driving those cars more than 10 billion kilometres. (Yes, billion with a b.)
  • Natural Resources Canada's estimates for range peg the LEAF at 243 kilometres, or 363 kilometres for the more common LEAF Plus.
  • The new Quick Charge can offer 80% range in just one hour.
  • The LEAF Plus is also quick: with 250 lb-ft of torque, it rapidly shoots off the line.
  • Meanwhile, the LEAF Plus's warranty coverage on the lithium-ion battery pack now stretches to 8 years/160,000 KMs.
  • The LEAF is eligible for the federal government's $5,000 EV rebate.
  • But there's so much more to the LEAF than its status as an excellent EV, so we've selected 5 of the coolest features from each version of the LEAF to show you that the LEAF isn't just a great electric car. It's a great car.
