Nissan Releases Three Retro Frontier Concepts In Chicago: Nissan Project 72X Frontier, Project Hardbody, Project Adventure
February 10 2022, Centennial Nissan
Nissan is paying homage to an illustrious pickup truck history with three 2022 Frontier concepts at the 2022 Chicago Auto Show. The new Nissan Frontier is already a hit – it was named Best Off-Road at TFLTruck for 2022 – but Nissan has upped the ante with the retro Project 72X, vintage Project Hardbody, and overland-ready Project Adventure.
As proof that the new Frontier is perfectly situated to accept a broad suite of potential modifications, the three Project Frontiers begin at different Frontier trim levels with three very different intentions.
PROJECT 72X FRONTIER
The first of three Frontier concepts is unspired by the 1979 Datsun 720. There's a 2.5-inch lift, the sport bar aft of the passenger cab, and adjustable front suspension. The wheels are actually Frontier spare wheels painted white, wearing tires from the 2022 Frontier PRO-4X.
PROJECT HARDBODY
Inspired by Nissan's compact truck of the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Project Hardbody bumps the lift up to 3 inches, adds fenders from the PRO-4X, and wears iconic block-style wheels with 33-inch tires. There's a very 90s sport bar (with very 21st century LEDs), a blacked-out front end, and unique door graphics.
PROJECT ADVENTURE
Rather than aim for the retro vibe, the 2022 Nissan Frontier Project Adventure adapts the new Frontier PRO-4X to the world of overlanding. That requires a 5-inch lift, 34-inch mud tires, a full Yaima bed system, Kicker audio, and a sky tent.
